| Below is a menu of different types of Federation spacecraft. In the yellow fields are the names of the vessel types; the red fields contain links to the images; the green fields offer information on the vessels, along with the episode or film in which it was first featured. |
AKIRA CLASS |
Type of Federation starship in use in the late 24th century. (First Contact) |
AMBASSADOR CLASS |
Type of Federation starship including the fourth Starship Enterprise. ("Yesterday's Enterprise" [TNG]) |
CONSTELLATION CLASS |
Type of Federation starship to which Picard's former command, the Stargazer, belonged. Similar in overall size to the Constitution class, the Constellation class ships were equipped with four warp nacelles and were thus suited for deep-space exploration and defensive patrol duties. ("The Battle" [TNG]) |
CONSTITUTION CLASS |
One of Starfleet's most famous types of vehicle, the Constitution class starships included the acclaimed original U.S.S. Enterprise. During the time of Captain James T. Kirk's celebrated first five-year mission of exploration, only 12 of these ships were in existence. ("The Cage" [TOS]) |
CONSTITUTION CLASS REFIT |
Type of ship to which the original Enterprise, and U.S.S. Yorktown (which was later redesignated as the second Enterprise) were upgraded. (The Motion Picture) |
DAEDALUS CLASS |
One of the first types of starships commissioned and operated under the auspices of the United Federation of Planets. These ships were among the first to demonstrate the primary/secondary hull and warp nacelle designs that would become characteristic of Starfleet vessels. The Daedalus class was retired from service in 2196. ("Power Play" [TNG]) |
DANUBE CLASS |
Also referred to as runabouts. Small Federation starships used for relatively short-range interstellar travel. Resembling an enlarged shuttlecraft, runabouts had a cockpit that incorporated a short-range two-person transporter, as well as seating for four people, including a two-person flight crew. The runabout's aft section contained living accommodations, and the midsection was a detachable module that could be replaced for different mission profiles. ("Emissary" [DS9]) |
DEFIANT CLASS |
A class of small, highly-powered, heavily-armed class of starships initially intended to defend the Federation against the Borg. Starfleet abandoned the Defiant project, which began in 2366, when the Borg threat became less urgent and after design flaws turned up during the Defiant's shakedown cruise. Despite the initial failure, the U.S.S. Defiant's successful performance has led to Starfleet commissioning more Defiant class starships. ("The Search, Part I" [DS9]) |
EXCELSIOR CLASS |
Dubbed "the Great Experiment," the first Excelsior class vessel was launched in 2285 as a test-bed for the unsuccessful transwarp drive development project. The ship, later refitted with a standard warp drive, became the prototype for the numerous Excelsior class starships built over the next several decades. The Excelsior class starships have served Starfleet for almost 90 years. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock) |
EXCELSIOR CLASS VARIANT |
An upgrade of the first Excelsior class ships, with slight modifications of the hull and saucer sections. (Generations) |
GALAXY CLASS |
Among the most advanced and most powerful vessels in the Federation Starfleet during the late 24th century. ("Encounter at Farpoint" [TNG]) |
INTREPID CLASS |
Type of Federation spacecraft. Intrepid class starships were 15 decks thick, and had a crew complement of about 140 and a sustainable cruising velocity of about warp 9.975. ("Caretaker" [Voyager]) |
MIRANDA CLASS |
Federation spacecraft type introduced in the late 23rd century. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) |
MIRANDA CLASS VARIANT |
Very similar to the original model, but with the aft pod removed. ("Emissary" [DS9]) |
NEBULA CLASS |
Type of Federation starship, slightly smaller than a Galaxy class vessel. The Nebula class ships featured a large upper equipment module, usually used for sensors, that could be customized for different mission profiles. ("The Wounded" [TNG]) |
NORWAY CLASS |
Type of Federation starship un use in the late 24th century. (First Contact) |
OBERTH CLASS |
Small Federation starship-type frequently used for scientific missions. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock) |
OLYMPIC CLASS |
Very little is known about this class of spacecraft. Though it was shown in the alternate future created by Q, Olympic class ships were in service as early as the latter half of the 24th century ("All Good Things" [TNG]) |
PROMETHEUS CLASS |
An experimental Starfleet prototype with secret advanced technology, including the emergency medical hologram EMH-2, and multi-vector attack capabilities. ("Message in a Bottle" [Voyager]) |
SABER CLASS |
Type of Federation starship in use in the late 24th century. (First Contact) |
SOVEREIGN CLASS |
Type of Federation spacecraft that in 2373 was the most advanced starship in Starfleet. Sovereign class starships were almost 700 meters in length and 24 decks thick. (First Contact) |
STEAMRUNNER CLASS |
Type of Federation starship in use in the late 24th century. (First Contact) |
The following are classes of Federation spacecraft for which no diagrams are currently available: Andromeda, Antares, Apollo, Bradbury, Challenger, Cheyenne, Chimera, Deneva, Freedom, Hokule'a, Istanbul, Korolev, Mediterranean, Merced, New Orleans, Niagara, Renaissance, Rigel, Sequoia, Soyuz, Springfield, Surak, Sydney, Wambundu, Yellowstone, Yorkshire, Zodiac The following spacecrafts were constructed from salvaged components, components in work, and custom assemblies fabricated by the individual fleet yards. Those vessels not destroyed or damaged beyond salvageability were returned to Starfleet bases and yards for rework back to their respective major classes or repaired and returned to service. |
