Note: Most Federation starbases were located on planetary surfaces, while some were space stations. |

RELAY STATION 47 |
Remote Starfleet communications station near the Klingon border. Most of the operation of the station were automated, although a two-person crew provided for nonroutine operations and maintenance. A network of such station throughout federation space permits interstellar communications between distant points with much shorter time lags than unboosted subspace radio transmissions would require. Space station facility located Sector 23, near the Romulan Neutral Zone. The Regula I Space Laboratory, seen in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and starbases seen in Deep Space Nine also used a similar design. ("The Measure of a Man" [TNG]) |
SPACEDOCK |
Massive station orbiting planet Earth, providing service facilities for Starfleet vessels. Several other Federation starbases are of the same design as Spacedock. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock) |
